Africa’s Pioneering National Park: Virunga

Virunga National Park was established in 1925 by King Albert I of Belgium, marking it as Africa’s inaugural national park. Initially created to safeguard the mountain gorillas inhabiting the Virunga Massif’s forests, the park later expanded to include the Rwindi Plains, Lake Edward, and the Rwenzori Mountains.

In 1979, UNESCO recognized Virunga National Park as a World Heritage Site. However, by the mid-1980s, significant poaching had severely reduced the populations of large mammals within the park, prompting UNESCO to classify it as an ‘endangered’ World Heritage Site. The subsequent twenty-five years brought relentless challenges, notably a refugee crisis stemming from the 1994 Rwandan genocide, which led to extensive destruction in parts of the park’s forests.

We advise that only daring adventurers and experienced safari enthusiasts consider Virunga, particularly during its calmer periods. Since 2009, the situation regarding safety in Virunga has seen improvements, and while sporadic rebel activities persist in the park’s northern and central areas not open to tourists, Virunga is currently experiencing an unprecedented peak in tourism and development. This resurgence is supported by significant investments from international donors aimed at enhancing the park’s infrastructure.

Exceptional Value in Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Virunga’s gorilla trekking expeditions stand out for their exceptional value, particularly when compared to similar experiences in Uganda and Rwanda. Engaging with a mountain gorilla family is an unforgettable, transformative experience.

Mountain gorillas are known for their intelligence, gentle nature, and the compelling dynamics observed within their groups. The commanding presence of the silverback, coupled with his tranquil disposition, embodies the essence of the ‘gentle giant.’ The playful juveniles, who engage in playful antics for most of their waking hours, invariably bring joy and smiles to visitors.

In 1987, the Frankfurt Zoological Society initiated the development of an 80-kilometer trail network within the Tongo Forest, embarking on a two-year endeavor to accustom chimpanzees to human presence. Despite enduring periods of unrest during the 1990s and early 2000s, the dedicated rangers of Virunga National Park have continued to protect and monitor the chimpanzees of Tongo. These efforts have ensured that the chimpanzees are once again accustomed to human visitors, who can now regularly observe these fascinating primates.

Ascend Africa’s Legendary Peaks and Volcanoes

The highlight of our Virunga safaris is the thrilling ascent of Mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano, which takes about five to six hours. It offers the rare opportunity to witness one of the planet’s only five active lava lakes.

The journey to the top of the 3,470-meter volcano is challenging but attainable for those of any age with a reasonable level of fitness. The panoramic views from the summit are nothing short of spectacular. Adventurers are invited to spend an evening at the volcano’s edge, where the sight of the churning lava lake promises a mesmerizing experience.

For the more experienced hikers, we provide expeditions to the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, located in the northern reaches of Virunga. Also known as the ‘Mountains of the Moon,’ these peaks soar to 5,109 meters and host the largest remaining glaciers on the African continent.

Encounter the Majestic Eastern Lowland Gorilla

The Eastern Lowland Gorilla, also known as Grauer’s Gorilla, stands as the most robust among the four subspecies of gorillas. Its notable features include a stocky build, expansive hands, and a short snout. Despite their imposing stature, Eastern Lowland Gorillas maintain a diet primarily consisting of fruit and various herbaceous plants, similar to their gorilla relatives.

Established in 1970, Kahuzi-Biega National Park (KBNP) serves as a sanctuary for the conservation of Grauer’s Gorilla, the largest species of gorilla in the world. This park remains the singular location globally where these gorillas can be observed in their natural habitat. Entry to the park is facilitated via the Rwanda-DRC border, offering visitors a unique opportunity to witness both mountain and Eastern Lowland Gorillas within the same safari expedition.

Explorations in Virunga and Kahuzi Biega National Parks represent some of the most profound and transformative experiences offered by A2A Safaris, consistently ranking as top choices among our clientele who possess the spirit and courage to explore these enchanting destinations.
