Details

Day 1: Nairobi – Samburu

Today, our driver/guide will pick you up from the Central Business District at 7:30 am to depart for Samburu National Reserve. The journey from Nairobi to Samburu takes approximately six hours. This rugged and remote wildlife reserve offers some of the most vibrant and diverse game viewing opportunities in the country. Samburu is home to a wide variety of animals, including rare species such as the long-necked gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Beisa oryx. Additionally, you may encounter leopards, lions, elephants, and crocodiles swimming in the Ewaso Nyiro River, along with hippos. You will arrive in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive to explore the natural beauty and abundant wildlife and birdlife of Samburu.

Day 2: Samburu

Spend a full day at Samburu Game Reserve, enjoying game drives. You may choose to embark on a morning game drive and return to the lodge for breakfast. During the midday heat, most animals rest, making the afternoon an ideal time to observe wildlife again. The stunning landscape offers a chance to see elephants in the majestic Ewaso Nyiro River, a remarkable sight. Wild dog sightings are also common in this unique protected area. Due to its remote location and years of inaccessibility, the park maintains a naturally serene and quiet atmosphere. In addition to the diverse wildlife, the park is a haven for bird enthusiasts, with over 450 recorded species. Samburu National Reserve is historically significant as one of the areas where conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness, a story popularized by the bestselling book and award-winning movie “Born Free.” Conclude your day with dinner and an overnight stay at the camp.

Day 3: Samburu – Marsabit

Today, you will have an early morning breakfast. Afterward, you may participate in the Samburu Village Excursion before driving to Marsabit, home to the Gabras, Rendille, and Borana tribes. Upon arrival at your lodge, you will have lunch and take some time to freshen up before heading out for an afternoon game drive in Marsabit National Park, formerly home to Ahmed the Great Tusker, also known as the “King of Marsabit.” Ahmed, a giant elephant, was the only one to receive state protection.
In 1970, President Jomo Kenyatta placed Ahmed under state protection through a presidential decree, making him a living monument. He was guarded around the clock to protect him from poachers. Ahmed was known for being a solitary and elusive elephant. In 1974, at the age of 55, he was found dead, resting majestically on his tusks and partially leaning against a tree. His remains are preserved at the Kenya National Museum in Nairobi.
Marsabit National Park features densely forested mountains and three crater lakes, the only permanent water sources in the region, providing habitat for a variety of birdlife and wildlife. Major wildlife attractions include the African elephant, the endangered Gravy’s zebra, lion, leopard, buffalo, bushbuck, and large herds of greater and lesser kudus, common zebra, Grant’s gazelle, and other small antelopes. After the game drive, you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4 :Marsabit – Lake Turkana

Begin your day with an early breakfast before departing for Loyangalani, bringing a packed lunch for the journey. You are expected to arrive in the afternoon. Loyangalani, a small town situated on the southeastern coast of Lake Turkana, translates to “a place of many trees” in the native Samburu language and is inhabited by the Turkana people. Established near a freshwater spring in the 1960s, it is where the El Molo people reside. Loyangalani has become a popular tourist destination in Northern Kenya, offering unique, though somewhat commercialized, experiences in the surrounding El Molo and Turkana villages.
Each year, the Lake Turkana Festival brings together twelve ethnic communities from Marsabit County: El Molo, Rendille, Samburu, Turkana, Gabra, Burji, Borana, Konso, Sakuye, Garee, and Waata. The festival highlights the customs and lifestyles of these tribes, showcasing their traditional costumes, arts and crafts, dances, and music.
This event provides a unique and captivating experience, enhanced by the stunning geographical features and limited general knowledge about Lake Turkana and Marsabit Counties.

Day 5: Lake Turkana

The day will be dedicated to engaging with local communities, allowing for cultural exhibitions, interactions, and photography opportunities. Depending on the wind conditions, there might be an opportunity to visit the Southern Island, although this area lacks powerful boats. Alternatively, you can enjoy a leisurely walk along the lakeshore of Lake Turkana. Following this, you will drive to South Horr, arriving at the camp in time for lunch. The remainder of the afternoon can be spent at your leisure at the resort.

Spend the afternoon enjoying various excursions. You can engage in canoeing or fishing on the lake, visit the local Njemps community, or simply relax and take in the beautiful lake views and bird walks.

The Njemps are a unique pastoralist community that consumes fish, unlike other nomadic groups where fish is considered forbidden. The primary attraction at Baringo is bird watching at the lake. It is also a perfect spot for relaxation, with the option of taking day trips to nearby Lake Bogoria. Boat safaris on Lake Bogoria are popular, and guides can take you through different routes. You can also tour Ol Kokwe Island, located in the middle of the lake, where the Njemps people reside. The Njemps are skilled fishermen and maintain their traditional nomadic lifestyle.

Your boat captain may use food baits to lure fish to the surface, providing an opportunity to witness the majestic fish eagle in action. Following this, enjoy a picnic lunch while driving to Lake Bogoria Game Reserve, renowned for its therapeutic hot geysers. The freshwater springs at the lake’s edge attract a plethora of birds and wildlife, including numerous Fish Eagles that often prey on local flamingos. Recently, the lake has become a haven for thousands of flamingos, making it a major tourist attraction in the region. After this excursion, return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
