Details

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi and Drive to Aberdares National Park

Upon arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will meet our driver guide for a brief safari orientation before heading to Aberdares National Park. Known globally as the site where a princess became the Queen of England at Treetops Lodge, Aberdares is a land rich in history and diversity. The park is named after Lord Aberdares, a founding member of the Royal Geographical Society. Situated in the central highlands, west of Mount Kenya and 160 kilometers from Nairobi, the lower slopes of Aberdares National Park are densely forested with large trees that gradually transition to bamboo forests as you ascend. Above 3,000 meters, the landscape becomes alpine moorland, eventually opening into grasslands dotted with giant lobelias. This destination promises a wealth of natural beauty and might just make you feel like royalty. Attractions: Key attractions include Lesatima and Kinangop peaks, numerous waterfalls, Twin Elephant Hills, Table Mountains, and a variety of wildlife such as black rhinos, elephants, buffalos, giant forest hogs, lions, leopards, baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, and syke monkeys. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 250 bird species recorded.

Day 2: Aberdares National Park to Samburu Game Reserve

After breakfast, drive to Samburu Game Reserve, arriving in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive. Samburu National Reserve is notable as one of the locations where conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness, whose story inspired the bestselling book and award-winning movie “Born Free.” Located along the banks of the Ewaso Ngiro River in Kenya’s arid northern region, the reserve is adjacent to several Samburu tribe communities, known for their traditional pastoral and nomadic lifestyle.

The Ewaso Ngiro River and its surrounding shady trees attract abundant wildlife, including giraffes, large elephant herds, buffalos, gerenuks, gazelles, waterbucks, and zebras (including the endangered Grevy’s zebras). Predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs are also relatively easy to spot due to the sparse grass cover. The reserve provides a unique opportunity to observe species that are native to this arid northern part of Kenya, such as the long-necked gerenuks, Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, and Beisa Oryx. The elusive Kenya leopard is often seen in the park, particularly in the evenings.

Day 3: Full Day in Samburu Game Reserve

Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel, followed by a full-day game drive, complete with picnic lunch boxes. Alternatively, you can opt for morning and afternoon game drives, returning to the camp/lodge for a hot lunch in between.

In the evening, enjoy dinner and stay overnight at one of the hotels mentioned on day two. Meals include breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the hotel.

Day 4: Samburu Game Reserve to Mount Kenya National Park

After breakfast, drive to Mount Kenya National Park. En route, enjoy panoramic views of coffee and tea farms. Arrive at the lodge by midday for lunch. The lodge, located within Mount Kenya National Park, is about 193 kilometers or a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Nairobi. Check in at Serena Mountain Lodge, nestled in a wooded area of the park at an elevation of 2,134 meters. The lodge overlooks the peaks of Mount Kenya, offering daily views of wildlife at the waterhole. The dramatic panoramas surrounding Serena Mountain Lodge provide opportunities for exploration, with cool, clear mountain air and sweeping treetop views. The African night comes alive with forest animal sounds. For closer wildlife viewing, visit the specially constructed bunker connected to the lodge via a short tunnel. The open-air deck provides views of the bustling water hole, frequented by elephants and buffalo herds.
